Sheriff’s Posse’s were formed in Maricopa County due to limited funds available for law enforcement. It was hoped that because there were fewer Sheriff’s Deputies available that Posses would help alleviate some of the Sheriff’s duties. Sun City West has grown both in population and in its needs. The county cannot supply the personnel needed on a daily basis– thus, the Posse becomes a valuable asset.
In order to help keep crimes from occurring against property and residents, there must be a show of trained personnel patrolling the streets at all times as a deterrent.
Your Posse has been well trained and through your donations, has been able to obtain state-of-the-art radios, reliable patrol cars, and all the other equipment which is needed keep the Posse in operation. New members receive an initial uniform allowance. However, if a member decides to take the additional training to become a qualified armed (QAP) person, they must purchase the required equipment.
Background
The Sheriff’s Posse is not only the largest Posse in Maricopa County, but also the best trained. You, as a resident of Sun City West, are the only person allowed to become a member of the Posse. During 2009 we contributed 72,712 hours in time and energy to help make Sun City West “As Crime Free As It Can Be.” To date, we have given 2,094,276 hours to enhance the safety of our community, acting as “the eyes and ears” of the Sheriff.
Whats In The Future?
We don’t know what the future holds. As more and more residents move into the area, the possibility of more minor crimes is imminent. We, the Sheriff’s Posse of Sun City West, have taken an oath to help protect and to assist the residents of Sun City West and this will be done to the best of our ability.
Trainees at "Speedworld" & New Members
To Become A Member Of The Posse You Must:
- Be a resident of Sun City West for a minimum of 9 months a year
- Be a US Citizen: Undergo an extensive background check by the Sheriff
- Have a valid Arizona Drivers License
- No Felony Convictions
- Clean Shaven (Mustaches Acceptable)
- Collar Length Hair
- Reasonably Good Health
- Serve a Minimum of Four Shifts Per Month
- Attend Monthly General Meeting

New members receive an initial uniform allowance plus additional uniform allowances based on years of service. All training is conducted by Posse Members at the Posse Headquarters with the exception of Law and Legal, which is conducted by MCSO Instructors at the Sheriff’s Training Facility.
Posse Operating Expenses
No tax monies – either from the County or State Government are received. The Sheriff’s Posse of Sun City West is totally dependent upon the financial support of the residents and local businesses. 100% of your contribution stays with the Sheriff’s Posse of Sun City West.
